My Fave 5: Coolest Rides From NAIAS 2017

The 2017 North American International Auto Show just wrapped up recently, thus making it a good time to recap some of my personal favorite rides that I saw at the show when I visited. Of course, this is just my opinion, so no need to rage quit if you disagree with any. Did you follow or attend the auto show this year? If so, what were your favorite cars that you saw? Be heard in the comments! Let’s get started!

1. 2017 Volvo XC90 & S90

Volvo’s recent injection of more passion and genuine luxury into their cars is really paying off, and no two products show this off better than the brand’s XC90 7-passenger crossover and new S90 sedan. In fact, the S90 was recently picked as the 2017 Automotive Design of the year! I was thoroughly impressed with how upscale each model felt, despite the use of common switch gear in each, and luxury touches such as real leather, wood, and aluminum coupled with a Bowers & Wilkins sound system lets you know you’ve chosen a ride that’s a cut above the norm. The seats in each model were exceptionally comfortable, and I do like how uniquely sculpted they are too. Although, the third row in the XC90 is somewhat tight. The swanky 4-passenger XC90 Excellence has “first-class seating” in both rows, massaging second row seats with heating and cooling functions, built-in monitors to the back of the front headrests, fold-out tables, crystal wine glasses, a mini fridge, and a slew of other ultra-luxury features. Very neat! But it’ll cost you, as that model is meant to compete with vehicles such as Range Rovers (which are quite expensive, if you didn’t know).

Pictured here: Interior of the XC90, XC90 Plug-In Hybrid, XC90 Excellence, V90 Wagon

For those looking for something slightly less flashy, the regular XC90 and S90 (as well as the upcoming V90 wagon variants) should more than satisfy you on your daily commute and has plenty of technology and safety to boot! Both are available with a variety of turbocharged and supercharged engines AND with plug-in hybrid variants too. I have a feeling things are just starting to get interesting at Volvo, especially as we continue to move towards the age of autonomous driving! Base price for the XC90 is $45,750, and the S90 $46,950.

2. The Genesis brand
Its truly shocking to believe that a brand such as Hyundai has come far enough to offer a strong luxury brand such as Genesis.
Roughly 10 to 15 years ago, if you would’ve told someone that Hyundai (or Kia by extension) would eventually have vehicles that could compete with the likes of Lexus or Audi in terms of luxury AND quality, but at a lower price point, you would’ve gotten stares or laughed out of the room. Now fast-forward and enter Genesis, Hyundai’s new luxury brand that’s poised to take on the best-of-the-best and strive to beat them at their own game. Initially, only two models will be on sale, the G80 and G90, which will replace Hyundai’s outgoing Genesis and Equus sedans, respectively. However, it’s been stated that in the future luxury SUVs and sports cars will be offered under the brand too. A new 3.3 twin-turbo V6 will be offered on the 2018 G80 Sport and is already available in the G90, among other previously offered V6 and V8 engine choices.

At a Dealer Near You

Genesis cars will be sold at existing Hyundai dealers starting out, which in my mind may possibly create some confusion. After all, there will be limited signage denoting that Genesis cars are available for sale there most likely, and they’ll be sitting on the same lot as a $15,000-$20,000 Hyundai Elantra. That aside, I feel that these cars are beautifully executed overall. There’s a perfect amount of real wood, leather, luxury and safety features such as adaptive cruise control, and value all in rolled into one package. When you consider that a comparable BMW 7-Series would cost thousands more, and after you get past the whole "brand name matters" argument, you’ll see that Genesis makes total sense. I’ll be interested to see how this brand develops over the years, as many start-ups can be unsuccessful.

3. 2017 BMW 4-Series Convertible

Let’s face it, who doesn’t like a convertible? Throw in the fact that it’s a BMW, and many people will be quick to say you have a winner on your hands! For me, I don’t always jump at badges when I see them. I can be just as happy driving a Kia as I am driving a BMW. But there was something about
this 4-Series 440-i convertible in Sparkling Brown Metallic with Oyster Dakota leather that struck me. It’s one of those cars that you fantasize about getting after you’ve “made it.” Plus, somehow it brings back fond memories despite being a brand new car. A convertible screams fun and interesting, and the same goes for what’s under the hood of this model, which is available with both turbocharged 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines. The overall ambiance of the interior was nice and the 4-Series felt solid, although tight. And trunk space with the top down was virtually non-existent, which is basically the case with all convertible. But let’s face it, who buys a car like this for practicality? If you’re looking for a unique, top-down way to pull up to your next social function, the BMW 4-Series convertible has you covered. The base price for the 4-Series convertible is $50,300.

4. 2018 Kia Stinger GT
That blue Stinger is absolutely stunning! My oh my!
Kia is a brand that’s growing, and growing FAST. So, when the company promised a few years back that they would be bringing a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) sports car to market soon, we should’ve figured it would only be a matter of time before we saw the real deal. Enter the 2018 Stinger, Kia’s first designated performance sedan. The Stinger will not only offer RWD, but it will also offer all-wheel-drive (AWD) and five selectable drive modes. Under the hood, a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder making 255 HP and a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 making 365 HP will be offered. Both will be paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The twin-turbo engine is expected to accelerate from 0-60 in as little as 5.1 seconds according to Kia.

What really caught my eye about this model was its styling, especially in the sharp blue color on display. It’s like nothing you’d expect from Kia! Supposedly, the Stinger’s styling was inspired by GT cars of the 1970s and is supposed to compete with cars such as the C-Class and 3-Series. However, its styled more like a Porsche Panamera or Audi A7 given that it’s got hatchback functionality. Therefore, I would say this model would compete more closely with the upcoming Audi A5 Sportback and the BMW 3 Series Grand Turismo. On price, however, it’ll undercut them. Kia estimates that this model will start in the upper $30,000 range and top out in the $50,000 range. For more info on the Stinger, look at the infographic I’ve provided a shot of. The Stinger will be released in the fall of 2017. I’m excited to drive one for myself!

5. 2017 Ford GT

Easily one of the most stunning cars at this year's auto show, the Ford GT will only be a limited production model.
One of the biggest stars of the show, the Ford GT is undoubtedly one of the most stunning cars… EVER! Especially in red! There’s just something about red… Even while sitting still, this supercar looked as if it was in motion, and it drew crowds so thick until it was basically impossible to push your way to the front to get a good shot of it. The modern, carbon fiber spin on this classic nameplate works well, and I only wish I would’ve been able to sit inside of the GT so I could get an even better perspective of what a marvel it is. As with any true head-turning design, head-turning numbers must come along with the package. And we now know official figures from Ford regarding exactly how powerful and fast the new GT is. Under the hood, a 3.5-liter mid-engine twin-turbo Ecoboost V6 is standard and makes 647 HP and 550 lb.-ft. of torque. Unfortunately, a manual transmission won’t be offered, so this engine will only be paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Top speed is said to be 216 MPH, even faster than the seemingly uncatchable Dodge Hellcat models. Of course, this could change when the Dodge Demon comes out as another high-speed, high-powered rival. But this is impressive, and makes the GT even MORE desirable!

Not So Fast!

Want one? Of course you do! But too bad. Only 500 people will ever have one. Since this is such as limited model, pricing is expected to begin at roughly $450,000. But hey, keep on saving up! You never know when one may show up on a used car lot down the road.

BMW X2 Concept

Compact SUVs are all the rage these days. So you can expect BMW wants to further capitalize on this market in whatever way possible. Enter the X2.

"2 DOORZ!"

Originally debuting at the Paris Auto Show, the X2 concept seeks to fill out BMW's compact SUV portfolio with a coupe-like entry into the segment. It's intended to be sportier than the X1, and may offer a 2.0-liter twin-turbo engine that similar to the one that's found in the X1 when it finally does go on sale. Pricing will most likely begin in the mid-$30,000 range. However, BMW hasn't said when it'll actually arrive on dealer lots. Until then, we can only hope that the model lives up to its sporty concept looks and truly turns out to be an "ultimate driving machine."

2018 Lincoln Navigator Concept

While the 2018 Navigator won't have the fancy doors or steps that this concept has, it'll certainly share some of this model's design cues, such as its new Lincoln grille.
Navigating Its Way Back

The 2018 Lincoln Navigator concept is a head turner for sure. One person I was standing near at the auto show even asked, "Is this Jason Bourne's truck or something?" Considering that the current Navigator (in its basic form) has literally been in production since 2003, it probably is a good thing that this concept has people talking so much. Now of course, the production model won't have suicide doors, a fancy suit center in the rear, actual steps coming out of the interior, or any of that, but it will share a lot of its basic design with this show car. And I say that's a good start!

Similar to the current Expedition and Navigator on sale, I would expect Ford's 3.5-liter Ecoboost V6 that's good for 380 HP to carryover in some form, as V8 powertrains are becoming too old school these days of course. However, the available transmission will receive an upgrade from 6-speeds (I assume), since its definitely much needed. Eight gears would be fine, but given that Ford recently co-developed a new 10-speed transmission with GM, that MAY even make an appearance in these new full-sized SUVs.

Overall, I do like what I see. It's big and imposing, but its also a needed improvement over the current model, and (may) inject some new life into a flat-lining segment. Or at least one that's been monopolized by General Motors. What are your thoughts? I'd expect the new Navigator and Expedition to arrive in late 2017 as 2018 models.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado High Desert

The High Desert package is available on higher trim levels of the popular Chevy Silverado truck, and seems to incorporate design elements of the discontinued Avalanche. This picture shows the interior of a 2500HD Silverado, which is mostly similar.
Family Resemblance

Here we have the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado High Desert, which is a package that's available on LT, LTZ, and High Country trim levels. If you look deeper under its skin, you'll notice that the truck seems to implement various design cues of the Chevy Avalanche, which was produced from the 2002 model year to the 2013 model year. Features included with the High Desert package are a lockable and water resistant storage system, 20 or 22-inch rims (on LT and LTZ trims respectively), and GM's Magnetic Ride Control suspension on High Country models. Additionally, on LTZ and High Country trims a 6.2-liter V8 making 420 HP and 460 lb.-ft. of torque is available. This engine is paired to a new 8-speed automatic transmission.

I have to say, I like this package. My father has owned one of the second-generation Avalanches for years now, and its been a wonderful truck. This will likely prove no different, especially since it appears to pick up somewhat where the Avalanche left off.

2016 & 2017 Ford Flex Overview + YouTube Video Link

Crossovers are hot these days, but one that typically flies under the radar is the Ford Flex. Originally introduced for the 2009 model year, I had the chance to tour a Flex that one of my coworkers at my internship this past summer bought new, and I must say, I was impressed. There was plenty of room on the inside, even in the third row, everything was well put together and felt substantial, and the vehicle offered more practicality than almost anything else like it due to its overall design. Headroom was plentiful even with the available Vista Roof sunroofs, which is a cool feature that I do recommend by the way. From what I’ve heard, ride quality is supple, complimenting the comfortable interior of the Flex. However, fuel economy ratings of both engines offered leaves something to be desired.

My coworker purchased a 2016 Flex Limited in Blue Jeans metallic with a black leather interior. His did not have the adaptive cruise control package, chilled console refrigerator, or uplevel engine, but it did have essentially every other option on it. For 2016, a rearview camera became standard and Sync 3 infotainment became standard on a variety of Ford and Lincoln cars, but for 2017, the Flex is unchanged. A naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 making 287 horsepower and 254 lb.-ft. of torque is standard, while a 3.5-liter EcoBoost (turbocharged) V6 producing 365 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque is optional. I recommend getting the EcoBoost given the Flex’s size, however, its only available on the top-of-the-line Limited trim level, which can get quite expensive. I wish Ford offered it on the midlevel SEL trim as well. All wheel drive is optional.

Overall, if you’re in the market for a van or crossover that deviates from the norm, don’t mind slightly different styling, and love unique luxury features and comfort, then the Ford Flex might just be for you.

Green Machines: Ford Announces New Upcoming Hybrids

Hybrids have historically been bought in lower numbers than conventional gasoline vehicles, whether due to popularity or availability. But with Ford's recent announcement, that could all change.
Being environmentally friendly is a must nowadays, no matter what industry you’re operating in. So, Ford’s announcement that two of their most popular models, the F-150 and Mustang, will be receiving hybrid variants in the coming years should come as no surprise. These two models will be built in Michigan and debut by the 2020 model year. The F-150 will be the first to be introduced and be sold in both North America and the Middle East. The Mustang will come shortly afterwards. I anticipate it may be exclusive to the North American market, given America’s love of muscle cars.

The 2016 F-150. The F-150 wouldn't be the first hybrid pickup ever, as GM tested these waters some years ago as well.
The F-150 is already a very decorated and unique model with its all-aluminum construction, and has received numerous awards, including being designated a “2016 Top Safety Pick” by the IIHS. Receiving a hybrid variant will add to its unique appeal. Word is that the F-150 will be powered by a turbocharged EcoBoost engine and electric motors that won’t compromise its payload capacity. It’ll be built in Dearborn, Michigan and should have undergone a mid-cycle refresh by the time it hits the market. The Mustang hybrid will be built in Flat Rock, Michigan alongside other versions of the Mustang. Ford says the model will provide “V8 power”, which could either imply a V8 engine will be paired to electric motors, or a four-cylinder or six-cylinder engine will be paired to electric motors and provide “V8-like power”. My spidey-car senses are telling me the latter will likely be the case. The Mustang hybrid may also debut for the next-gen model.

I do like the concept of a hybrid sports car with "V8 power" from Ford, although that wording is definitely subject to interpretation.
But Wait! There's More!

If this isn’t enough to spark your interests, then perhaps hearing that these are just two of the total 13 new electric hybrid vehicles Ford plans to introduce over the next five years. Overall, the rollout of these models will cost $4.5 billion and includes models such as plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles. In addition to those models, there’s plans to build a fully electric crossover SUV by the 2020 model year at the Flat Rock assembly line with at least 300 miles of range. That’s significant given how strict fuel economy regulations are becoming. Moreover, Ford has plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid Transit van and two new hybrid police vehicles. The company anticipates that in 15 years, their electric offerings will outnumber their “normal” vehicles due to the declining costs of battery packs and shifting consumer tastes.

A throwback to 2009 when Ford built their 100,000th hybrid.
With all of the new models to come and popularity increasing,
I'm sure Ford is due to build a million of the 13 announced
models alone.
While pricing of these models is unknown, hybrids are a growing market. And personally, I don’t expect gas prices to stay low forever. Especially given the change in global powers and escalation of world events that we’re currently witnessing. So truthfully, this is all a matter of if Ford can bring these models to market in enough time to capitalize on any fluctuations and price them appropriately.

Are you fond of hybrids? Which of these models, if any, are you excited for? More "Ford Week" to come.

Coming Home: Ford Cancels Plans for Mexico Plant, Chooses to Invest In Michigan

HAPPY NEW YEAR! And welcome to "Ford Week" on Adam’s Autos! A new year means new news, and this is big news. Especially for residents of Michigan.

The auto industry is a global business, easily one of the most global businesses in existence. Platform sharing between countries and even automakers is becoming more common because of a need to decrease production costs while maximizing efficiency, profits, and quality. Thus, Ford’s announcement on January 3, 2017 that they will no longer invest $1.6 billion into a new Mexico production facility comes as major news to many advocates for keeping jobs in America. Ford will instead invest $700 million into their Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan.

Ford's Mustang is one of the models produced at the Flat Rock assembly plant in Michigan, although this investment could allow for other models to be brought in or for production to be expanded.
This expansion of the Flat Rock plant is expected to create 700 new jobs, a major plus for Michigan’s economy. Currently, the Ford Mustang and all-new Lincoln Continental are made at this plant. Production there was idled late last year in October after Mustang sales declined some. However, we can expect that output of the factory will likely increase due to this upcoming expansion. This announcement coincides with news that Ford will be producing new hybrid vehicles as well, including a new fully-electric SUV that will be made at the Flat Rock assembly plant by the 2020 model year. More on these upcoming hybrids a little later.

Who Did It?
So who’s responsible for this sudden change in conscience? Many might be quick to thank president-elect Donald Trump for stating that he will heavily tax companies that choose to produce products outside of the United States and then import them. However, if you examine the situation closer, you will see that Ford still intends to move next-generation Focus production to Mexico despite threats from Trump to keep production in the U.S. “or else”. The president-elect has even taken aim recently at GM for their Cruze hatchback being produced in Mexico. Yet, even after numerous Twitter warnings, this move is necessary according to Ford since sales of small passenger cars have declined due to consumers wanting more SUVs and crossovers. Because of this transition, Ford expects to see increased economies of scale for the Focus since their Hermosillo facility will be operating at near maximum capacity. Additionally, Ford expects to save on labor costs. I’m willing to bet that some of these saved costs, from both labor and construction of new facilities, will be allocated to other domestic retooling efforts, such as the upcoming one at Flat Rock.

Ford has stated that that intend to move small car production to Mexico, despite their recent decision to invest in their Flat Rock production facility or warnings from president-elect Donald Trump of potential consequences of doing so.

Why Mexico?
Nearly all automakers produce in Mexico, due to the fact that the country has more free trade agreements in place than any other place in the world other than Israel. Additionally, Mexico has become one of the largest automotive producers in the world. More on that later in the week. While producing domestically and supporting our nation is certainly important, we should also remember that trade and other business collaborations are just as necessary for global sustainability and our economy as well.

Various locations of automakers in Mexico. As a part of my internship, I actually studied some of these facilities extensively. Mexico is one of the world's fastest expanding automotive producers with a stable economy. Just one of the many reasons why automakers are so attracted to this region. (Pardon the map quality)

What is your opinion of this decision by Ford and on trade agreements? I’ve got a feeling we’ll be seeing more decisions by manufacturers to retool and keep production of certain models in the United States in the coming years. I also expect we’ll see some rebellion by companies as well.

More Ford week coming up!
