Dream Car Highlights - 2019 Cadillac CT6 V-Series

Welcome to my first installment of my "Dream Car Highlights" series! I will highlight briefly in these posts cars I desire or have desired to own at some point in time. Note, that I'm not much of an "exotic" car guy. So, while some may appear occasionally, this series will largely be comprised of cars I've seen at dealers, on the road, etc. that piqued my interest or that are "unique" in some way. Might not be what you'd expect always. With that said - let's get going!

The CT6-V may just end up being a one-off model...

What is it: A high-performance version of Cadillac’s full-sized luxury sedan, the CT6. It features a twin-turbo “Blackwing” V8, good for 550 HP and 627 lb-ft of torque paired to a 10-speed automatic with torque splitting AWD. Track-tuned active rear steering is also standard. Base price is $89,785.

Why do you want it: The regular CT6 is already a well-rounded, enjoyable large luxury sedan. This model just adds to that and ups the ante with additional power and style to match. What’s more, is that only 275 for now are supposedly being produced! And they’re already SOLD OUT! If you haven’t heard - GM is undergoing a big restructuring and getting rid of many 4-door cars, and the CT6 looks to be one of those vehicles. But rumor is this may change apparently now, and the CT6 may stick around... We’ll see...

The CT6-V could basically be Cadillac’s “last stand” in terms of full-sized sedans. The way the market is rapidly shifting towards efficiency, crossovers and trucks, a full-sized American V8-powered performance sedan could never be seen again after this - essentially making this a GUARANTEED collector’s item I feel. It’s for that very reason, I want one in my garage possibly one day. I like unique, fun and useful things.

As I mentioned, new blog posts will continue, but will largely depend on my grad school/work schedules. Until next time, ROLL ON!

Takes Two to Tango - Daimler/BMW & Toyota/Panasonic Partnerships

Partnerships seem to be becoming more commonplace. What could this mean for upcoming products?
Another day, another alliance. This round, Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, and BMW are reportedly in talks to merge their mobility divisions into a single company. Both companies would partner on self-driving car development, and also may share next-generation subcompact car platforms for the A-Class and 1-Series.

Toyota and Panasonic are said to be partnering up for electric vehicle battery development, not just for Toyota, but for rivals as well. That’s quite interesting. The new company would oversee battery R&D and production at facilities in China and Japan. Lithium-ion and solid-state batteries were mentioned in the agreement. Solid-state batteries are more stable than lithium-ion ones, and Toyota intends to offer them on vehicles next decade.

Partnerships are popping up more and more, and the reason is because it reduces complexity and production costs. We just saw Ford and VW team up to share commercial vehicle development, a truck platform, and potentially EV development as well. I discuss my theories on this in a prior post (here: https://www.adamsautos.org/2018/11/so-whats-up-with-ford-and-possibly-vw.html). Will these partnerships lead to a greener and autonomous future. Time will tell!

NEW YOUTUBE VIDEO - Pure Sound - Snow Drives

Since we're getting hit with the first winter storm of 2019, I figured it'd be appropriate to post a video of my cars driving in the snow. I've had my Saturn Aura V6 since high school and leased my Jeep Compass Latitude last year.

While the Saturn has never been great to drive in bad weather, its been a fast and fun car to drive during all other seasons. The Jeep is very stable in bad weather, over potholes, has heated seats/steering wheel/lower windshield, and is smooth and efficient basically all the time. It does need a little more power at times, I feel.

Enjoy this short video, and like, comment and subscribe for future videos to come! I'm in grad school and working as I've mentioned, so all blog and video uploads will depend on my schedule. ROLL ON!

Winter Storm Car Safety

If you live in the Midwest, you’re about to get walloped by a snow storm AND dangerously low temps. With that, it’s always a good idea to know what to do during this season. Here’s a couple tips from State Farm and one from yours truly:
  1. Perhaps one of the more commonly heard tips - swap your regular tires for snow tires. You’ll notice the differences, such as improved traction and shorter stopping distances.
  2. Keep your gas tank at least half full. This way if you get in a situation where you need to make an escape or wait for help, you don’t run out of fuel.
  3. Adam says: Keep “winter weather gear” in your car. This includes a blanket, an extra coat, snacks, and whatever else you feel will be absolutely necessary to survive the cold if waiting.
Winter is certainly not my favorite season. But preparing ahead of time is always a wise move. Please stay safe and warm if you’re in the path of the storm, and travel only when necessary.

My original winter driving safety post has useful info too: https://www.adamsautos.org/2015/11/winter-driving-tips.html

Recent New Reveals & 2019 Detroit Auto Show Recap

It’s auto show season, and I’ve got 20/20 vision for some upcoming cars. We’ve seen some interesting debuts in 2019 so far. Let’s explore a few.

2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA

Note: Mercedes-Benz did not attend the 2019 Detroit Auto Show.

The CLA used to be a poster car for those who wanted a fancy ride “just for the badge.” But the new CLA looks more sleek than the outgoing model, and rolls in new technology. For 2020, the new CLA, shown at CES 2019 in Las Vegas, will ride on the same platform as the new A-Class sedan and has new steering and suspension improvements. A 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine will be standard, and make 221 HP - up 13 HP over the current CLA. A 400 HP CLA45 AMG is scheduled to arrive in the future. The interior looks great and up-to-date with current Mercedes cars.

Strangest thing to me about this is why does Mercedes-Benz feel a need to sell TWO new compact sedans in a market that is rapidly shifting towards crossovers and trucks? The GLA has a redesign coming too, and could better capitalize on this trend. Regardless, this is a solid effort. I have an older review on the current CLA I’ll be completing, and I’ll highlight more in-depth the new CLA as well - again, pending free time I get from grad school and work...

2020 Ford Explorer

Ford’s current Explorer was getting long in the tooth, but an all-new sixth generation model debuted at Ford Field in Detroit. The 2020 Explorer now rides on a rear-wheel drive (RWD) architecture shared with the 2020 Lincoln Aviator. A 2.3L turbo four-cylinder paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission is standard. A hybrid Explorer with a 3.3L V6, a 10-speed automatic, 1.5 kWh battery and 500 miles of total range will also be offered.

Perhaps the biggest news, or at least the most interesting, is the addition of the Ford Explorer ST. Debuting alongside the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 that will likely have over 700 HP, the Explorer ST represents a more practical side of Ford Performance. Power will come from a 3.0L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6, making 400 HP and 415 lb.-ft. of torque. AWD will be standard on this model. Other features offered across the Explorer range include Ford’s Co-Pilot360 driver assistance tech such as blind-spot monitoring, B&O audio, and a Tesla-style 10.1-inch infotainment screen.

While I’m not crazy about the new front end styling yet and I think the 10.1 inch screen looks slightly “tacked on”, I’m sure these traits will grow on me and interested buyers. That giant screen and center gauges display should prove very useful nonetheless. The sixth-generation Explorer makes a solid first impression, with higher quality interior materials and an upscale design to back it up.

2020 Cadillac XT6

Speaking of crossovers, Cadillac doubled down on their crossover introductions, following up the XT4 with the larger XT6 in Detroit. From the side, you see some Volvo XC90 styling, but the front and rear is all Cadillac, with cues taken from the Escala concept.

Personally, I’m not sure how to feel about it... I’m sure it’ll sell well, this is what the market is craving after all. But it rides on the same platform as the smaller XT5, the GMC Acadia, and Chevy Traverse. And it certainly looks derivative of all those crossovers from various angles... Unless this offers unique powertrains and technology, such as Super Cruise, what’s the advantage of picking this over an Acadia Denali or Buick Enclave? It’s also got tough competition in the 2020 Lincoln Aviator, which has simply stunning attention to detail.

Standard power comes from a familiar GM 3.6L V6 making 310 HP through a 9-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) are offered, though Sport trims have a torque-vectoring rear end. While we’re on the topic of trims, two will be offered at launch: Premium Luxury and Sport. I’m sure others will come later. And who knows - if we’re nice, we may even see a plug-in hybrid version or a V-Sport model with the twin-turbo V8 from the CT6-V. Fingers crossed - but don’t hold your breath.

Speaking of CT6: It did make an appearance at this auto show - in V-Series guise. However, GM now says they don’t intend to cancel the CT6, but will seek to build it elsewhere. I’m personally happy if this is really true, as the CT6 is a great car. And I’d LOVE to drive a V-Series one some day!

2020 Toyota Supra

Toyota’s long-teased, long-awaited sports car made its official debut/return at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. It’ll be interesting to see if this model makes it into any upcoming Fast and Furious movies (I’m sure it will, somehow - that series never ends). This new Supra was developed in conjunction with BMW, and remains RWD like old Supras, while offering a turbo inline-6 cylinder engine. That 3.0L engine makes 335 HP and 365 lb.-ft. of torque using an 8-speed automatic transmission- no manual is offered. Base pricing starts at $49,990 before $930 destination.

What’s interesting is that it appears the Japanese market will have two four cylinder engines offered too - one making 197 HP and another 255 HP. Which one of these engines America will eventually get, I’m not sure. My money is on the 255 HP one. A Launch Edition model will also be offered for $56,180, and feature bits such as red leather (on white and black colored Supras) and 19-inch matte-black wheels. A commemorative carbon-fiber plaque and Akio Toyoda’s signature can also be found on this special model.

That’s all just “super”, wouldn’t you say?

More New to You

Among these reveals, other cars that made an appearance include the Hyundai Elantra GT N-Line which has various performance upgrades, Kia Telluride, Lexus RC-F Track Edition, Lexus LC Convertible Concept, the aforementioned 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 with a simply bonkers exhaust note, Ram’s new Heavy Duty Trucks, and the 2020 Volkswagen Passat.

Did you go to the Detroit Auto Show and are you excited about anything new coming out?

Next year the Detroit Auto Show moves to the summer time, so I’m sure there will be even more reveals and events then to discuss.

These Are Your 2019 North American Car, Utility and Truck of the Year Winners

Winners for North American Car, Utility and Truck of the year were recently announced! And it’s a double win for one automaker.

A Job Well Done
G70 competes with cars like the BMW 3-Series.
The 2019 Genesis G70 is the 2019 North American Car of the Year, beating the Honda Insight and Volvo S60/V60. Standard is a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine with 252 HP, and available is a 3.3L twin-turbo V6 making 365 HP. Both powertrains, the 8-speed automatic transmission, and G70’s platform are shared with the Kia Stinger, which was nominated last year for COTY. G70 pricing starts at $34,900. I’m looking forward to trying one of these sports sedans out for myself - very nice work, Genesis!

While small in size, Kona packs
a lot into a compact package.
Hyundai’s new Kona/Kona EV subcompact CUV won 2019 Utility of the Year, beating the Jaguar I-Pace and Acura RDX - which cost significantly more. This further drives home Hyundai’s point of delivering a lot of car for your money. Standard is a 2.0L four-cylinder with 147 HP, and the EV model has a range of 258 miles. Hyundai called the Kona “timeless and comfortable.” Pricing for the gas model begins at $19,240.

The Ram 1500 is more luxurious than ever,
and you really do feel it.
Winner of 2019 Truck of the Year is the 2019 Ram 1500. It’s a nice ride, I’ve seen some at recent auto shows, along with the trucks it beat - Chevy’s all-new 2019 Silverado and GMC’s all-new 2019 Sierra. They’re decent enough, but Ram definitely took it to the next level. Standard power comes from FCA’a 3.6L Pentastar V6, good for 295 HP. 48V mild-hybrid technology is available to assist fuel economy as well.

However, if you need more power for towing capacity, look non further than the new Ram 2500 and 3500 models. The Ram 3500 will offer up to a 7,680 payload rating and 35,100 pound towing capacity with 400 HP and 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque! Insane! I intend to analyze a new Ram 1500 when I have a chance. Grad school and work of course play a factor in this process.

If you want a well-rounded, powerful new vehicle, check out some of FCA’s recent products. They’ve definitely got you covered.

Are You Surprised?
My congratulations goes out to this year’s winners! Were you surprised by these results, or did you predict the winners correctly? Personally, I predicted the Truck of the Year winner correctly. But the Car of the Year and Utility of the Year awards are a surprise!

Show Me the Car Fact #FactFridays

The first installment of Fact Fridays for 2019! I'm in grad school AND working full-time now, so new posts will be less frequent, but quality and relevancy will not be compromised! Now let's roll!

Did you know: Roughly 65% of the world’s population drives on the right side of the road. A short list of countries that are left-hand drive include India, Japan, Australia, South Africa, and Thailand. Have you been to any of these places and driven there? I'd personally like to go to South Africa in the future.

New/Rare Rides - Take 8!

Here’s some rare and new rides for the new year. AND for my 200th blog post! Another milestone! We have the Cadillac ELR, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, BMW X6, Volkswagen Phaeton, a Jeep Golden Eagle from the late 70s/early 80s, Toyota Prius Prime, Volvo 240/260 station wagon, Subaru Baja, and Eagle Vision.

I’ve actually seen some modern Jeep Wranglers with a “Golden Eagle” package or decal on them, so that’s a nice throwback. Word is Cadillac will become GM’s leading electric car brand, so the ELR was perhaps a little early to the party. And perhaps we’ll see more Prius Primes now that styling has been subdued (somewhat) for 2019 and it gains AWD-e as an option.

Have you seen anything new or rare lately?

Throwback Thursday - Traffic JAMS

We've all been at a complete standstill on the road before... Or just bored at work. Never fear, the weekend will soon be here! Until then, let's switch into memory lane and rock out while we roll on!

This week's jam: Ice Cream Paint Job (Remix) - Dorrough feat. Soulja Boy, Rich Boy, Jermaine Dupri, Jim Jones, Slim Thug, and E-40 (2009)
Soulja Boy has been in the news a lot lately for many reasons, so perhaps this is appropriately timed. We haven't heard much from anyone else on this song in a long time. This was one of my favorites in high school (lol).
But what makes this throwback even more timely is the fact that they're talking about CARS - with cool features and paint jobs. And who just doesn't like that!?
