Wrangler vs. Camry - Sales Battle of the Decade?

Both the Camry and Wrangler receive redesigns for 2018.
However, only one can be sales king...

Jeep is going crazy right now. ICYMI - In April the Wrangler almost outsold the Toyota Camry! It was off by a mere 72 UNITS in sales. Jeep brand sales in total were up 21% in April. I would say this is all largely fueled by America’s love for SUVs right now, as well as the old and new Wrangler (JK -> JL) being on sale at the same time for now.

3-in-1 = Automotive Fun: Farewell ATS Sedan, Detroit Auto Show Dwindling & Holden Acadia

Its been quite some time since we’ve had a 3-in-1 posting, so here we go with one! Let’s jump right in with perhaps another sign of the SUV times we’re now living in...

ATS Sedan Axed

ATS Sedan and ATS-V Sedan.
Cadillac has announced that their ATS Sedan will be discontinued after the 2018 model year. However, the coupe will continue on for at least another year sounds like. This came out of the blue last week, and is honestly sad, as the ATS is a fine driving car. Now, it still has its flaws - it’s relatively tight inside, it continued its entire life cycle with its only major update being the changing of the Cadillac logo basically, and it’s a sedan in the crossover era, which it can’t really help. But the amount of performance you got out of the V-Series model always struck me as quite impressive. And desirable. But R.I.P. ATS sedan... Another case of close, but still a little too far from the crown.

Word is that the Cadillac lineup of sedans will be trimmed to just three - a CT4 to replace the ATS, a CT5 to replace the CTS, and the CT6, which I assume would remain the flagship and fill in for the eventual loss of the XTS. All will have rear-wheel drive layouts. Cadillac is also planning to introduce a crossover larger than the XT5 and smaller than the Escalade (‘XT6’ perhaps?). The Escala concept is also supposed to come to production in some manner around 2021. You can clearly tell the brand is trying to reinvent its modern luxury image.

Audi Out - Detroit Auto Show Loses Another Automaker

It’s not looking too hot for the Detroit Auto Show, and not because it takes place in the dead of winter either. Audi has just decided it won’t be showing up to the 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), following in behind fellow automakers BMW and Mercedes-Benz who also said they won’t attend. One concern that’s been raised about the Detroit Auto Show is it’s timing - being in the winter causes journalists and visitors alike to have to brave the cold for reveals. Sounds weak... But I understand. I can’t stand being cold.

Another potrntial reason behind the constant backing out is that NAIAS falls so close to the Los Angeles International Auto Show and the Consumer Electonics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Many new technologies by automakers and other companies alike are often displayed at these shows, negating the need to rush into Detroit. I mean, Vegas weather in January or Detroit weather in January? Hmmm... Idk man.

It’s been proposed that the Detroit Auto Show move to October, when the weather is warmer and when it’ll be out of proximity of other major auto shows, save SEMA, which is more specialty-based. I like this idea, purely for the weather advantage, but also because it will allow for more flexibility of the show itself. For example, ride and drives and off-road courses could be held outdoors instead of everything being inside. We will see how this plays out and if any other manufacturers back out.

Crossing-Over Down Under: The Holden Acadia

The GMC Acadia was redesigned for the 2017 model year, after going on essentially unchanged since its 2007 introduction.
Now, word is Holden is getting in on the crossover action.
We know, Crossovers are the hot topic right now. But they’re so hot, until they’re actually going to be exported from HERE, in America, elsewhere now. We’ve heard about vehicles like Ford’s new EcoSport being produced in India and shipped to America. But it’s less common we hear of the reverse. Now, General Motors is going to add a third shift to its Spring Hill, Tennessee facility where the GMC Acadia and Cadillac XT5 are made and export the Acadia to Australia and New Zealand as the Holden Acadia. GM ended manufacturing there last year (R.I.P. Chevy SS). I actually think I saw a pre-production model on the highway in Michigan not long ago! It was an Acadia with different logos...

This news also comes not long after GM eliminated a shift to match slowing demand, but now demand is growing again. This isn’t the first time the company has had to add a shift for crossover demand either. Back when the Enclave initially came out, I recall hearing demand was so high additional shifts were needed to match production to sales. AND STILL in addition to this new shift, a $294 million dollar investment will be made to accommodate production of the upcoming large Cadillac crossover (again, XT6?). Spring Hill is where Saturns used to be manufactured, and it still looks like things are just as fresh as ever there.

So from this we can gather that crossovers are still the rage, Cadillac is soul searching, and Detroit has a decision to make rather soon. Your thoughts? Until we discuss cars again, ROLL ON!

2018 Subaru BRZ Joyride

The Subaru BRZ was introduced for the 2013 model year.
Shoutout to a high school friend by the name of Nick Squanda who stopped by today and took me for a sweet ride in his new Subaru BRZ! Fun car! And ride quality, even over the rough stuff isn’t nearly as stiff as you’d think. Cornering ability is strong - the car has no issues aggressively tackling Michigan roundabouts (or potholes immediately after). While not a particularly fast car, it doesn’t need to be, as it’s a pleasure to hustle around for fun. Also, it felt well put together overall. A nice, sporty and affordable ride!

The BRZ comes with a 2.0L Boxer engine making 205 HP and rear-wheel drive. This BRZ had a 6-speed manual, however a 6-speed automatic is available as well. The color you see is called “WR Blue Pearl”.Toyota offers a version of this car called the 86, for good measure. It was previously known as the Scion FR-S, before that brand was shuttered in 2016. I’m interested to see how the collaboration between BMW and Toyota for the new Supra turns out given how balanced this car is!

“This Is America - Look What I’m Whippin’ Up!”

Not long ago, Childish Gambino, a.k.a. Donald Glover, a.k.a. director of the show “Atlanta” and artist behind albums such as “Camp” and last year’s “Awaken, My Love!” dropped the song and music video to “This Is America”. And immediately, America went wild. Beyond the fact that Gambino is one of the most interesting artists of our generation, this video addressed many of the moral issues plaguing our nation in an entertaining, but still HIGHLY conscious manner.

Jim Crow comparison
From the opening scene of a black man being executed in the Jim Crow stance, to the choir being gunned down shortly, all while guns are shown being treated with more respect than black lives (which DO matter), this video is not your average visual. Childish Gambino even threw some cars into the mix for good measure, with another message thru the dancing and lyrics.

SZA, Childish Gambino, and old cars... Is there anything more woke or
symbolic than this picture?
While Gambino was dancing on the old 90s Hondas, Toyotas, and even Cadillacs, I couldn’t help but get slightly nostalgic. For my childhood that is... See, everything seemed so much simpler back then. Even amongst the world’s chaos, demonstrated by the background dancers and visuals I feel, I was able to tune it out and focus on ME. My own life, my own self. But now, life is serious and it’s not all about me. It’s about understanding the world around me as well, and working together to become agents of change.

So yes, while 90s cars, and life, and style are simpler, society is constantly becoming more complex. It’s ok to be nostalgic. Therapeutic and an escape sometimes even... But STAY WOKE. This is America. They’ll catch you slippin. #getyourmoney

Ironing Out Details: Trump’s Steel Tariff

If you’ve been paying attention lately, you’re likely aware that we have a highly controversial administration in office right now. One of the more recent proposals by the Trump administration has been to impose a 25% tax on imported steel and 10% on imported aluminum. Certain countries will be exempt. Several automotive companies are disappointed in the move, despite having operations in the United States. Why is that? Let’s break down a few key points.

Past & Present

It’s worth noting that under President Bush, there was a steel tariff as well. However, it did not work out well, negatively affecting GDP and employment, so the plan was scrapped. Fast forward, and this legislation is being proposed right at a time when automakers are looking to streamline and globalize their product lineups. Thus products imported from elsewhere, even if they only have a portion of foreign parts, could see price increases. OEMs will also see higher manufacturing costs.

Automakers such as Ford and Toyota released statements saying they advocate for free trade, and that these tariffs could inadvertently affect suppliers for key products. Additionally, many analysts are concerned that this could turn into a “trade war” situation, with nations such as China retaliating.

Here’s a short list of affected steel and aluminum products from IHS Markit:

  • Carbon and alloy flat products
  • Carbon and alloy long products
  • Stainless flat and long products
  • Unwrought aluminum
  • Aluminum bars, rods, and profiles
  • Aluminum wire
  • Etc...

There are other products as well. For a more complete list and additional info, follow the links provided below:

What are your thoughts on this? Personally, I’m concerned about long-term trade wars as well. And these tariffs could lead to the discontinuation of some products I’m thinking. It’s also possibly another reason why Ford has decided to exit the sedan market all together in the United States. Especially since they want to enact their “One Ford” global strategy and streamline platforms.

I also recommend making a deal on something you like (if it's predominantly foreign-made) while it's on sale or before further tariffs are enforced. I've heard rumblings of additional tariffs after a recent meeting with OEMs...

Holy Lamborghini, Batman!

Pope Francis was given a Lambo last year, but now will be giving it away.

Hey, ever wanted a holy Lambo? Well the opportunity is gone, but you can still check out the one the Pope Francis himself had. Last year, Lamborghini gifted the Pope a brand new Huracan in special white paint with gold striping. He never intended to keep the car, but signed it. So as you can imagine, this is quite a special ride. Even more so than usual, and the price it fetched at auction shows that best...

Pope Francis’ Huracan sold for €715,000, or $861,575 USD, at auction! The Pope says the all money will be used for charity. The car? Museum life or joyriding perhaps.

Mitten State Updates - Innovation and Regulation

Two big stories have recently come out of Michigan - one involving the production of cars and the other the selling of them.

First, the good:

Nexteer Innovates

Nexteer was recently one of four named a General Motors Innovation Award winner at the Supplier of the Year ceremony held last month in Florida. The award was given for the company’s High Availability Electric Power Steering System (EPS). Increasingly, we’re seeing more and more new cars use EPS to increase efficiency. Nexteer’s system is also optimized for advanced safety and varied levels of autonomous driving.

Nexteer in Saginaw, Michigan.
Overall at the event, GM recognized 132 suppliers from 17 countries for outstanding value and continuations. Nexteer has 25 manufacturing facilities, 5 engineering centers, and 11 customer service centers in total globally, including operations in Saginaw, Michigan. New innovation can start local and grow globally!

And now, the not so good...

Patsy Lou Chevrolet Stop-Sale

Patsy Lou Chevy, a dealer located in Flint, Michigan, has been banned from selling cars for 15 days. The mid-Michigan dealer’s license was suspended following numerous customer complaints and violations. On the list of complaints by customers are grievances such as a title was never provided to them after purchase, which is required by law. Secretary of State Ruth Johnson says, “No dealer is above the law.”

This is a rather serious consequence, as Patsy Lou has other dealers in Michigan as well, so the whole franchise image could be tarnished. However, I’m in favor of the punishment, as I’ve had my own terrible dealer experiences in the past couple years. I don’t understand the concept of a dealer or salesman being “unwilling” to make a sale... You’re only hurting YOURSELF and YOUR DEALER at the end of the day! I can always go elsewhere (or talk to a different salesman) to get my car. And that’s exactly what I did at Garber Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Saginaw, Michigan - and I left with my 2018 Jeep Compass Latitude after working with a more ethical salesperson. Time will tell beyond the 15 days what implications this will have on Patsy Lou’s brand.

Share your thoughts on Nexteer, Patsy Lou, or any other local business awards and or dealer experiences you have as well! My advice is always be well prepared to make a deal and reap your rewards.

Show Me The Car Fact #FactFridays

The Dodge Journey was introduced for the 2009 model year and Toyota Yaris for the 2006 model year in the United States. Both feel like they've been out longer than that...

#DidYouKnow: What do the 2018 Dodge Journey and Toyota Yaris have in common? Four tires? Four doors? Four-cylinder engines???

Close... But actually, these are two of the last new cars to come with an available FOUR-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION in the year 2018! Journey gets it with its base 2.4L four-cylinder, which is also only available in front-wheel drive, and for Yaris, it’s an UPGRADE transmission from its five-speed manual. Many new cars have progressed to using eight, nine, even TEN SPEED transmissions! Well not these two.

It should be noted that you can get a six-speed automatic with Chrysler’s Pentastar V6 in the Journey in upper trims along with all-wheel drive. But the fact that a four-speed is still even offered in products as old as these (let alone as the top pick in the Yaris) in 2018 is nuts... You would think Toyota would at least offer their new CVT with a 1st gear from the 2019 Corolla Hatchback in the Yaris!

Does “less is more” aptly apply here I wonder?

Show Me the Car Fact #FactFridays

#DidYouKnow Mercedes used to compete with Benz before the two companies merged under the Daimler-Benz company. Following this merger, the first Mercedes-Benz branded vehicle rolled off the assembly line in 1926. These vehicle were marketed to the “highest circles of society.”

Marketing to the highest percentage of consumers seems to be a strategy that works well for Mercedes-Benz - or at least for the last century roughly it has. Market conditions and consumer tastes can change as fast as the spring weather in Michigan.

Throwback Thursday - Traffic JAMS

We've all been at a complete standstill on the road before... Or just bored at work. Never fear, the weekend will soon be here! Until then, let's switch into memory lane and rock out while we roll on!

This week’s jam: Jumpin’, Jumpin’ -Destiny’s Child, 1999

Album: The Writing’s On the Wall

OG Destiny’s Child had summer ‘99 LIT. And given how much "jumpin" around I’ve been doing this week, this throwback is appropriate haha.

This song makes me recall riding around in my grandfather’s pinkish-purplish Mercury Cougar, looking at cars at dealers. That’s a big reason why I have my automotive passion now. What do certain old songs make you remember?
