Honda and Toyota aren’t the only brands pushing their electrified models - Jeep also has made solid efforts in this area. Although the brand is also readjusting their strategy some too. Let’s look at a few key points.

The New 2026 Cherokee

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee is redesigned and larger than the model it replaces!

An all-new Cherokee has been released for the 2026 model year! Riding on the STLA Large platform, this new Cherokee is a departure from the old version in that it is now a full-hybrid. Under the hood, you will find a 1.6L turbocharged engine paired with two-motor power split system (similar to Toyota’s planetary gear set - GOOD for reliability) that will net a total 210 HP and 230 lb.-ft. of torque. Current trim levels on offer include Base, Laredo, Limited, and Overland - so no Trailhawk model or “Trail Rated” badges yet. Pricing starts at $36,995.

Overall, I like the boxier styling of this new generation Cherokee and it appears to be even more tech-focused and luxurious. It is also larger and and more eco-focused, which is interesting. Certainly worth a look!

The Wagoneer S will Skip the 2026 Model Year; 4xe is Gone

The Wagoneer S is a departure from the traditional Jeep in the sense that it is an EV and very high performance!

While Jeep has launched a new hybrid model for 2026, its first full EV, the Wagoneer S, will skip the same model year due to slow sales. It’s unknown right now exactly when production will resume, but at this time Jeep says there’s still 2025 Wagoneer S inventory available and they aren’t worried about short-term sales interruptions. Work is already underway to launch the 2027 models which will include an updated NACS charge port, like many other EVs have been switching to.

With the expiration of the EV tax credits, I can understand why sales tapered off (although it isn’t uncommon to find heavy discounts at dealers on these), but I do hope to see the Wagoneer S live on - and PERHAPS a Chrysler or Dodge variant enter production too… both of those brands could use some new product infusion, honestly. And a sporty, luxury EV fits both of those brands BETTER if we think about it! Pricing for the Wagoneer S starts at $67,995.

What’s more, ICYMI: 4xe at Jeep is no more. The Grand Cherokee and Wrangler 4xe models have been discontinued for 2026. In fact, all PHEV models in the Stellantis North America portfolio are discontinued for 2026, as the company revises its electrification strategy to one that “best meets the customer’s needs”. Range-extending hybrids and series-hybrids are what the company will focus on. 

The Road Ahead and Path Less Traveled

Behold: Here Is The Updated 2026 Nissan Pathfinder

The Pathfinder gets a refresh for 2026, as it faces new competition in the form of a renewed Telluride, Palisade, and GM three-row SUVs.

The Nissan Pathfinder has long been a popular model for the brand and now it’s time for it to receive a mid-cycle refresh. For the 2026 model year, the Pathfinder’s exterior styling is enhanced with a new grille that brings it more in line with the new Murano and 2026 Sentra. Baltic Teal is also a new paint color and the Platinum trim has a new 20-inch rim design. The interior is also updated with a new 12.3-inch touchscreen with standard Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The SL and Platinum trim also have a new 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. It also looks like there are more touch capacitive controls in general to go with the new infotainment display, which was previously an 8-inch display. Most competitors have a 12-inch display, so this keeps the Pathfinder more relevant with its competition.

One thing that is unchanged between the 2025 and 2026 Pathfinder is the powertrain: you will still get a 3.5L V6 engine as standard, no turbocharging or hybrid options. AWD is available, standard on the Rock Creek trim. Nissan has been behind the curve on electrification, such as hybrids, but did just recently reveal the Rogue PHEV, which is basically just a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV rebadge. It is worth noting that the Pathfinder’s upscale cousin, the Infiniti QX60, only comes with the 2.0L VC-Turbo engine now.

Alfa Romeo News: Tonale Refresh, Quadrifoglio Models Return for 2026

The Tonale gets a facelift for 2026 to keep it current with Alfa Romeo's forthcoming design.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is a twin of the Dodge Hornet (or really, it’s the other way around), but both have been modest sellers for their respective brands. For 2026, the Tonale is getting a slew of midcycle updates in an effort to keep it fresh and generate more interest. Out front, the Tonale will get a new front-end bumper and grille design, and the front and rear tracks are also wider which will give the small SUV a more dynamic stance. There are also new paint colors: Rosso Brera, Verde Monza, and Giallo Ocra. Under the hood, the 2.0T engine becomes the sole powertrain – the 1.3T plug-in hybrid model is dropped. The 2.0T four-cylinder engine makes 268 HP and 295-lb.-ft. of torque. I feel this is the powertrain right path moving forward, as EV sales have been on a decline, the U.S. EV tax credit incentive is gone now, and Alfa Romeo needed to reverse course slightly on their “full-EV brand by the late 2020s” plan. Plus, the PHEV Tonale was consistently a slow seller, despite having an all-electric driving range of 33 miles. On the inside of the 2026 Tonale, there’s FINALLY a red leather interior color option – which I was personally crossing my fingers for the longest to see! Previously, you could only get a black interior color option on the Tonale, unlike its other Alfa counterparts the Giulia and Stelvio. 

...And if you’re wondering about the closely related Dodge Hornet and if it will get a similar 2026 model year refresh, that is unknown right now – it is on a production hiatus due to increased tariffs. A reminder, that the Tonale and Hornet are both produced in Italy.

A Return to Form

However, back to the Stelvio and Giulia – their product cycles have been extended until 2027, as the next generation models are under development. And as a result, the previously discontinued high performance Quadrifoglio models will be making a comeback! As a reminder, these models had a Ferrari-designed 2.7L twin-turbo V6 making 505 HP – and if you’ve ever heard one in action, it sounds GLORIOUS! The next generation Stelvio and Giulia will ride on the Stellantis STLA Large platform, which can be tailored to fit both ICE and electrified powertrains, as we see now in the new Dodge Charger.

SPOTTED: Here’s The 2025 Cadillac Optiq

The Optiq is the smallest revealed of Cadillac's "IQ" EV SUVs.

I recently spotted the 2025 Cadillac Optiq on the road! It is a compact electric luxury SUV, and the next to be released in the line of Cadillac’s “IQ” EV SUVs. The others are the Escalade IQ, Vistiq, and Lyriq. The name “Symboliq” has also been trademarked. But let’s cover some specs about the Optiq for now.

The Optiq will be available in four trim levels: Luxury 1, Luxury 2, Sport 1, and Sport 2. Pricing for the Luxury 1 trim starts at $52,895 and range is estimated to be 300 miles with standard dual motor eAWD. Something else that is interesting and makes the Optiq stand out from its competitors, such as the Tesla Model Y, is that it will have standard Super Cruise with a 3-year OnStar Super Cruise Plan and the most standard rear cargo volume in its segment (26 cu. ft.). Other standard technologies on the Optiq include a 19-speaker AKG Studio sound system with Dolby Atomos, a 33-inch diagonal LED dashboard display, Google Built-In Compatibility with over-the-air updates, wireless phone charging, 11.5 kW AC charging, Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) compatibility, a panoramic fixed glass sunroof, one-pedal driving with Regen on Demand braking, and a 5G Wi-Fi Hotspot. You can also get a two-tone paint job on the Optiq, which I personally would go for.

You can opt for a 19.2 kW AC and DC fast charging, which will give you 55 miles of range per hour with a GM PowerShift wall charger and 79 miles of range in 10 minutes at a DC fast charging station. There are also 126 color ambient mood lighting. Overall, it’s a nice EV crossover. One that I look forward to taking a look at when they hit dealer lots! If I was to get an Optiq, I would get a Luxury 1 trim in two tone paint with options. How would you spec your Optiq?

Truck It Up: The Kia Tasman (and K4)

Kia has been teasing a truck for some time now, but whether or not the U.S. will get it is doubtful.

Kia is planning to make a pickup truck called the Tasman, and it’s been spotted testing for quite some time now! The brand says that we should expect an official unveiling in October of this year and that they have conducted thousands of tests to ensure typical “truck durability” let’s say.

It’s unclear if the Tasman will come to the United States. This largely uncertain because of the “Chicken Tax” - a 25% tariff on foreign produced trucks implemented in response to tariffs on American poultry imports first imposed in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Everywhere else in the world isn’t quite as stuck on trucks as Americans are, but the South-Korean produced Tasman will be sold in the Middle East, Africa and Australia. It will also offer a diesel engine option and 2WD and 4WD applications. Should Kia produce the Tasman at their factory in Georgia, then perhaps we could get it stateside. But rumor is the brand is also testing and developing a full EV pickup as well. Interesting…

I worked in product planning while the Hyundai Santa Cruz was in development at Hyundai, and it was an exercise in communication between management in the Americas and South Korea. There was often conflict… So we’ll see how this vehicle turns out in the end, and if it actually DOES make it to our shores. Or if we get an EV Kia truck…

Speaking of New Models…

In other new car news that’s NOT an SUV or truck: the new Kia K4.

The K4 is a replacement for the Forte and has a starting price of $21,990 – very affordable in the current new car market. Under the hood, you get a 2.0L 147 HP inline 4-cylinder engine standard on LX, LXS and EX trims paired to a CVT. The upcoming GT-Line trim can be had with the prior engine or with my favorite Hyundai/Kia powerplant: a 1.6T engine making 190 HP. Other tech features available in the K4 are standard wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a full-screen dashboard display (roughly 30-inches of display), optional Digital Key 2.0 with Ultra-Wideband, available heated and ventilated front seats, and available Harman/Kardon premium audio.

Personally, I’m not sold on the styling of the K4. But if I was going to get a Kia K4, this is the trim I would get: EX with options, Deep Sea Blue paint. To me, this is the best balance of options and price in this segment.

Accessories I added: Wheel Locks ($75), Cargo Mat ($100), Mudguards ($125), Carpet Floor Mats ($175), and Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirror ($350).

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is Coming!

We’re getting an all-new 4Runner - FINALLY! Toyota has already shown the vehicle to employees. Tune in at 10:15 P.M. ET tonight to see on Toyota’s social media pages.

Other New Toyotas

Toyota has been on an offensive lately with their product. We just got a new Land Cruiser, Tacoma, Tundra, Prius, the Crown and upcoming Crown Signia wagon, and a new Sequoia not long ago. I worked in electrified powertrain research at Toyota before the pandemic, and all of these vehicles feature electrified powertrains. Now comes big changes for the 4Runner. But let’s not forget the ever-popular Camry!

The 2025 Camry has been shown and it features a hybrid-only powertrain line up - gone are the days of the V6. A 2.5L inline-4 cylinder engine paired with electric motors makes 225 HP on front-wheel drive 2025 Camrys and 232 HP on all-wheel drive models. Speaking of AWD, for the new Camry the system used will be Toyota’s “Electronic on Demand” system, with an electric motor at the rear. Expect to see this vehicle hitting lots soon.

I mention these other vehicles because Toyota is on a mission to become a carbon neutral company in manufacturing and in their product line. They already have some of the most efficient production and supply chain methods and were a pioneer in this aspect in the auto industry. I’m interested to see if the new 4Runner remains totally true to its rugged roots, has a V6 or turbocharged I4 and electrified engine, and what other changes Toyota will make to keep it relevant.

Update 10:15 pm 4/9/24:

Here it is! The official 2025 Toyota 4Runner! The design seems to me more of an evolution vs. a revolutionary change. But still, a change that was needed. 

For 2025, the 4Runner will be available with Toyota's i-FORCE Hybrid Max System - I figured given the current trend with Toyota the we'd see an electrified 4Runner sooner or later. In the Tacoma Hybrid, the i-FORCE Max powertrain is a 2.4L turbocharged inline-4 cylinder making 326 HP and 465 lb.-ft. of torque paired with an electric motor between the engine and transmission. This setup is different from Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive system used in older models, such as the Corolla Hybrid. Note that the hybrid powertrain will be optional in the 4Runner. Among other more comfort-oriented changes include a revised suspension that promises to maintain the 4Runner's off-road abilities while providing more comfort on-road. There will be a new "Trailhunter" off-road trim for the enthusiasts in addition to the more conventional and luxury-themed Limited and Platinum trims. A 3rd row seat will also be offered! Pricing isn't known, but I'm willing to bet that the new 4Runner will start in the $40,000 range and top out in the high $60,000 range.

2025 Jeep Wagoneer S - Here It Is

The Wagoneer S will be Jeep's first full EV model for the 2025 model year.

Last year, Jeep teased that it would be putting the Wagoneer name on an electric SUV. Now, we get our first official look at the upcoming Wagoneer S.

What Is It?

The Jeep Wagoneer name continues a large luxury SUV legacy for Jeep while simultaneously ushering in a modern era in Jeep’s mission to become an “American Range Rover” competitor. Looking ahead to 2025, the Wagoneer S will be the brand’s first full EV and have an estimated driving range of around 400 miles. While most specs and supplier data aren’t known yet, Jeep expects the Wagoneer S to make around 600 HP and have a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds.

We do know now that the Wagoneer S will ride on the Stellantis STLA Large platform, which supports an 800V architecture. This is a Jeep, so I would expect to see an adjustable air suspension allowing for some off-road use, additional underbody protection for battery components, and e-all-wheel drive (eAWD) courtesy of a dual electric motor set up. A “Trail Rated” badge is also possible on the Wagoneer S, but then again, the regular gas-powered Wagoneer lacks a Trail Rated badge because Jeep themselves says it’s “too big and heavy to be trail rated”. While the Wagoneer S looks smaller than the gas variant, weight will definitely be a factor - pointing to the idea that having a right sized off-roader certainly matters. Other brands, such as Rivian or the upcoming/returning Scout brand, may want to take note of this.

Design

In terms of the design, you can see some familiar Jeep traits as well as some Range Rover Velar-inspired styling on the exterior. On the inside, it’s all screens, all day. Some features on the interior of the Wagoneer S include a 19-speaker McIntosh sound system, mood lighting and heated/cooled/massaging seats. Pricing is unknown, but I expect this vehicle to crest $100,000 just like the gas models.

Would you consider a Wagoneer S? Or a gas Wagoneer? I like modern Jeeps, but I fear that they may be going too far against the grain with their pricing strategy to be an “American Range Rover”. We’ll see how this model fares in the market against existing and upcoming rugged luxury EVs.

Big, Bold, Electric: 2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ

Here’s *quite literally* one of the biggest new car reveals as of late: the all-electric Cadillac Escalade IQ! Riding on GM’s Ultium battery platform shared with the Cadillac Lyriq and GMC HUMMER EV, the Escalade IQ boldly reimagines what “Escalade” means for the EV era. Advanced features such as vehicle-to-home (V2H) charging connectivity and a 55-inch total pillar-to-pillar LED display for the driver and front passenger will be on offer. Rear seat passengers will be able to access the internet and various streaming apps via a rear seat entertainment system, and a 40-speaker AKG premium sound system is available.

All the Right Appointments

As for the EV side of the equation, the Escalade IQ has it covered there too. The frunk (or E-trunk as Cadillac calls it) measures a large 12.2 cubic feet. Driving range from the 24-module 200 kWh Ultium battery packs is expected to be around 450 miles at a full charge. And eAWD will be standard as well as four-wheel steering and “Arrival Mode” (Cadillac’s version of the HUMMER EV’s Crab Walk). 0-60 MPH will take 5 seconds and 800V DC fast charging is possible. At a public fast charging station, you should be able to charge up to 100 miles of range in 10 minutes.

Of course, this all won’t come cheap… The Escalade IQ will START at $130,000. But hey, look at it this way: that’s roughly $20,000 less than what the current Escalade V starts at, plus since it’ll be built in Detroit, you’ll get an EV discount. So perhaps it’s a luxury EV “bargain” in that regard! I must say, I do like the way it looks. I can’t wait to sit in one when the get to auto shows and dealers.

2024 Lamborghini Revuelto: Super Power Super Hybrid!

The Aventador is on its way out, but in its place, we’re getting the Lamborghini Revuelto! This new generation of Lambo is embracing electrification, while also keeping ties to the past. Powering this new super car is a plug-in hybrid powertrain, consisting of a 6.5L V12 engine and triple electric motors paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Combined power output will be 1001 HP. A 3.8 m-kWh battery pack is positioned between the front seats and makes a max 187 HP, but this output can be sent to the three previously mentioned electric motors as needed.

To recharge, you’ll have to access the port from the frunk - or the “front trunk” for those of you that are unfamiliar with this term. Keeping things inside, Lambo has designed the Revuelto with more passenger space and storage space. Also, there’s three digital displays, which includes the 12.3-inch display that houses the vehicle’s gauges. You can choose from 4 different drive modes: Strada, Sport, Corsa, and new Cittá mode, which keeps the car in EV mode. Corsa mode unleashes all 1,001 HP while the calmer Cittá mode limits the car to 178 HP. When in full-power mode, Lambo estimates that 0-60 MPH will happen in about 2.5 seconds.

How do you like the Revuelto? I say I’m adding it to my “Dream Car Highlights” list! A PHEV Lambo in my favorite color (blue) with 1000+ HO just rocks - now I just need a small loan of a million dollars hahaha.

2024 Hyundai Sonata - One Last Hail Mary

Sedan sales continue to circle the drain vs. SUVs... But Hyundai is preparing one final push for
relevance with the 2024 Sonata.

Sedans sales are still sliding, and rumors are swirling that Hyundai and Kia might discontinue the Sonata and K5, respectively, after the 2025 model year. This would leave only the Japanese sedans (Camry, Accord, Altima, Legacy) as the sole competitors in the midsized segment. Although the Malibu could get a surprise 10th generation as well…

Until these answers all become clearer, what we do have some certainty on is that there is going to be a refresh for the 2024 Sonata, and it draws inspiration from the redesigned Kona with a full width light bar up front as part of its lighting signature. The overall look for me seems like something out of a Star Wars cartoon/movie now – I worked in product planning a Hyundai/Kia when the current Sonata generation launched and I remember how the LED running lights running up the fender was so dynamic looking the first time I saw it on the pre-facelift. On the inside, there’s now a new steering wheel design complimented by a curved display comprised of two 12.3-inch screens, as we’ve seen gradually creeping its way into other Hyundai/Kia/Genesis products. The powertrain lineup is expected to remain the same: that consists of a base 2.5L inline four-cylinder, a 1.6L turbocharged inline four-cylinder, and a 2.5L turbo inline four-cylinder in the N-Line trims. The hybrid models will also likely carryover, but no PHEV.

First Impressions Matter

How do you like the refreshed Sonata? It looks like they left everything that matters most intact (powertrain, comfort, etc.), while changing the bits that will enhance style the most. I believe I like the non-N-Line look the best this time around (the silver car in the middle picture), it’s very sharp. I see some Lucid Air influence! Also, I think it would be great if Hyundai went ahead and offered AWD on the Sonata like its sibling, the Kia K5. As many of you are aware, I have a Kia K5 AWD with the 1.6T engine and I find it to be a great car – the 1.6T from Hyundai/Kia is one of my favorite powertrains. Pair it with the corporate hybrid system and AWD, like in the Tucson SUV, and I feel like you would have something special for a midsize sedan.

While I doubt that this refresh will move the bar overall for the Sonata in terms of its popularity vs. its SUV counterparts, I do hope it inspires Hyundai to stay in the sedan market a little longer. I’m also looking forward to seeing what the Kia K5 refresh looks like. Although Kia’s refreshes have been a little less endearing to me, as I think their vehicles are as aesthetically perfect as they can get right now.

Unveiled – The 2024 Mazda CX-90

The CX-90 contains the most powerful engine Mazda has ever put inside a vehicle - the
e-Skyactiv G 3.3L inline-six turbo. It doesn't look bad in this new color called "Artisan Red".

Mazda has officially taken the wraps off the 2024 Mazda CX-90 SUV, and it represents a continued march upmarket for the brand. The CX-90 will be Mazda’s flagship vehicle and will eventually serve as a replacement for the current CX-9 SUV. We can look at the CX-90 and clearly see family resemblance to the upcoming CX-70 – mainly that both will use Mazda’s new longitudinal-engine architecture capable of supporting electrified powertrains. AWD is standard on the CX-90.

Speaking of powertrains, two will be found under the hood of the CX-90. One setup will consist of a 3.3L turbocharged inline-six cylinder paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. Power output will be 340 HP and 369 lb.-ft. of torque, which if you really think about it, makes the CX-90 one of the more powerful entries in the mainstream segment. In fact, an I6 engine with electrification is so uncommon and European in flavor, until I would say that this vehicle will compete more so with luxury SUVs such as the BMW X5, Buick Enclave and Genesis GV80 than a Hyundai Palisade, the new Honda Pilot or Chevrolet Traverse.

If for some reason you want to go the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) route, Mazda has you covered. The second powertrain you can choose from in the 2024 CX-90 is a 2.5L naturally aspirated inline-four cylinder paired with a 17.8-kWh battery pack good for 323 HP and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. Both engines are paired with an in-house Mazda-designed eight-speed automatic transmission and the PHEV should have between 20-30 miles of all-electric driving range.

As for its design, I think that the CX-90 is a handsome vehicle. It looks like a longer, more luxurious evolution of the CX-9 and has solid RWD-based proportions. It also embodies Mazda’s Kodo design language well and looks sportier than many of its direct and indirect competition. Despite its expressive styling, the CX-90 is going to be roomier than the current CX-9. Mazda says six, seven and eight passenger variants will be offered, but I’ll reserve judgement on if this is going to be a comfortable family hauler until I’m personally able to get seat time in one.

To my eyes, the CX-90's interior uses thoughtful wood trim and fabric to create an environment that would make you think you're in a BMW instead of a Mazda.

Overall, I’m a fan of modern Mazdas and the direction they’re taking in general, although the loss of the Mazda6 sedan is still a disappointment to me. How about you – do you like the new CX-90? Pricing is unknown, but I will update this piece once it becomes available. Mazda says the 2024 CX-90 will go on sale in spring 2023 - so not that long of a wait for you die-hard Mazda fans out there!

Update 2/8/2023: Pricing for the 2024 CX-90 will start at $40,970 for a base model. PHEV models begin at $48,820 for the Preferred trim and $54,275 for the Premium trim. The non-electrified 3.3 Turbo S trim stats at $53,125 and Premium Plus trims begin at $61,325.

2023/2024 Cadillac Lyriq Overview and Walkaround

The Lyriq is an important model for GM and Cadillac, as its one of the first to ride on the Ultium platform, which will underpin all future GM EVs. I recently had a chance to view the Lyriq up close at my local Cadillac dealer.

General Motors and Cadillac have announced they are going all-electric and the Lyriq is one of the first vehicles in that process! Riding on the modular Ultium platform, the Lyriq comes standard with RWD and a 102-kWh battery making 340 HP with an estimated driving range of 312 miles. AWD models will come in early 2023 and according to Cadillac, these models will make more than 500 HP. In fact – don’t get your hopes up about getting your hands on a 2023 model. They are all sold out! So, if you want a Lyriq, you will have to order a 2024 model. Lyriq has a 19.2-kW on-board charger that will add 52 miles of range on Level 2 home charger. That’s pretty powerful – for comparison’s sake, the Tesla Model Y has an 11.5-kW on-board charger. On a public DC fast charger, the Lyriq can charge at up to 190-kW and add 76 miles of range in 10 minutes. Standard safety features include blind-spot warning, rear-cross traffic alert, automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist. If you’re curious – it appears that the upcoming Chevrolet Blazer EV and Honda Prologue EV will be more mainstream-branded sibling vehicles to the Cadillac Lyriq.

Some innovative features you will find on the Lyriq include Super Cruise, which is GM’s semi-autonomous Level 2 hands-free driving assistance feature (coming soon), over-the-air (OTA) updates for the infotainment system, a heads-up display (coming in 2024), 33-inches of total display screens on the dashboard, and a 19-speaker AKG sound system. I’ve had a couple of opportunities to get inside of the Lyriq – once at the 2022 Detroit Auto Show and again recently at my local McDonald Cadillac dealer which was holding a Lyriq social event. Overall, I find the Lyriq to be VERY impressive and to feel like a true Cadillac. All the interior materials feel solid, and the seats are very comfortable. I also find the exterior styling to be very attractive, I’m interested in seeing the Lyriq in other colors. If you’re interested in awards and accolades – the Lyriq is one of five finalist for Green Car Reports “Best Car to Buy 2023”, as the publication cites it is ringing in a new electric era for General Motors.

And don’t forget – Cadillac has also recently shown their flagship Rolls-Royce sedan EV competitor, the Celestiq, as well. It will have a base price of $300,000 and will be hand-built! The Lyriq, however, starts at $62,990 and under new guidelines from the Inflation Reduction Act, it should qualify for at least a portion of federal EV incentives since its built in Spring Hill, Tennessee.

The cell packs in the Ultium platform are arranged differently for various configurations of vehicles. Large vehicles, such as the GMC HUMMER EV, are double stacked (second picture). In the Lyriq, there will be a single stack of Ultium cells. Ultium Cells LLC is a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solutions.

2024 Ford Mustang Power Figures and Changes

The 2024 Mustang is a tribute to both tech and old school power at the same time.

We still don’t know pricing, but power figures for the 2024 Mustang have been released. The EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine will make 315 HP and 350 lb.-ft. of torque paired exclusively to a 10-speed automatic transmission – it features a new fuel delivery system and an updated turbocharger. The Coyote 5.0L V8 will produce between 480 HP and 500 HP – the 500 HP rating is reserved for the Dark Horse model, which is more performance-oriented than other Mustang offerings. The updated 5.0L V8 features dual throttle bodies and dual air intakes among other enhancements. On the GT trim, a six-speed manual transmission is standard, and the 10-speed automatic will be optional. Both engines make more power than previous versions (5 more horsepower for the EcoBoost, and between 30 and 50 more horsepower for the GT, depending on how your Mustang is configured).

First unveiled at the 2022 Detroit Auto Show, other changes for the seventh generation Mustang include more aggressive, yet aerodynamic body work on the outside with shorter overhangs, a more driver-focused interior with digital displays and a 13.2-inch touchscreen with over-the-air (OTA) updates, and a new feature called “Remote Rev” on models with the active exhaust system. Remote Rev allows the owner to remotely rev up the Mustang using their key fob. The steering system has also been revised and the new Mustang has updated spring rates and shocks for performance driving scenarios. 

Overall, the 2024 Mustang is sounding like a real stallion! Do you like it? Get your horses ready for some more pony power from Ford.

Last Call: The Dodge Charger & Challenger Make Their Last Stand; Also – Dodge Hornet, Dodge Durango Hellcat, Goodbye Infiniti Q60

For the first time in its existence, Dodge is allowing buyers to order a Challenger Convertible through dealers as part of a send-off to the V8-powered muscle car era of the brand.

There’s been speculation for years about when the Dodge Charger and Challenger will be discontinued or redesigned. Now, we have an official end from Dodge themselves. 2023 will be the final model year of the current Charger and Challenger and each vehicle will have a “Last Call” plaque under the hood that says “Designed in Auburn Hills, Assembled in Brampton” – giving homage to these muscle cars’ roots. In addition, Dodge will release several special edition models with an extra special edition model debuting at SEMA 2022. A few older colors we haven’t seen in a few years will make their return: B5 Blue, Plum Crazy Purple, and Sublime Green. As if this isn’t enough positive news for you, the Charger and Challenger lineups will all be allocated at once to dealers so you have a better shot at getting the exact car you want, plus the Durango Hellcat is back for 2023, with its full 710 HP. Dodge is making sure its V8s go out with a roar, not a whimper as electrification continues to close in.

Guess what – we’re still not done with the Dodge news! During their “Speed Week” this week at the M1 Concourse in Pontiac, Michigan, Dodge unveiled the Hornet compact crossover, which is basically a twin of the Alfa Romeo Tonale. It’s the first all-new Dodge model in almost a decade. While Dodge says that it will be going electric in the future, the future really is here now, because the Hornet can be had with a plug-in hybrid powertrain unlike other Dodge branded vehicles to date. Borrowed from the Alfa, the Hornet will have a fully-independent suspension and torque-vectoring AWD. Every Hornet can be optioned with an available Track Pack, which includes 20-inch wheels, upgraded dampers and unique/sportier styling. In the base Hornet GT, you will find a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder making 268 HP and 295 lb.-ft. of torque paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission – likely the same ZF unit used in other FCA/Stellantis products if I had to make an educated guess. In the plug-in hybrid R/T model, a 1.3T engine is used and coupled with a 121 HP electric motor for a total system output of 288 HP and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. 0-60 MPH according to Dodge happens in 6.1 seconds, and there’s a “PowerShot” feature that allows for an extra 25 HP and instant torque for 15 seconds. As for the battery pack that’s used in the Hornet, it’s 12 kWh in capacity and the vehicle has a 7.2-kW onboard charger. EV range will be around 30 miles and on a Level 2 charger the vehicle can recharge in around 2 and a half hours. Overall, I’m excited for the Hornet. Yes, it’s a rebadged Alfa Romeo Tonale that’s riding on the Jeep Compass platform. But I had a 2018 Compass, and I quite enjoyed having that SUV, but it just needed more power (rumor is that the Compass is getting more power for 2023). The plug-in hybrid powertrain and 2.0T in the Tonale/Hornet should do the trick and make the vehicle drive a lot more spirited. Every Hornet will have a 12.3-inch digital gauge display and 10.3-inch infotainment display on the interior. Hornet GT pricing will start at $29,995 before destination and the R/T will start at $39,995.

Dodge also unveiled the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept with its new “Banshee” powertrain. Its not known how much horsepower the powertrain makes, but Dodge claims that this new electric Charger will be faster than a Hellcat. The Charger Daytona SRT will also have the PowerShot feature previously mentioned that’s in the Hornet, allowing for briefly increased acceleration and passing power. If you’re worried about sound, the Charger Daytona SRT will have a Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust system with sounds equivalent to that of a Hellcat. As for other features and design cues, the Charger Daytona SRT takes styling cues from the original Charger Daytona and it also uses the Fratzog logo from Dodge models in the 1960s and 1970s. Additionally, inside the vehicle there’s a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and a 16-inch digital gauge cluster and mood lighting.

Other Sports Car News

The Infiniti Q60 was introduced for the 2017 model year. 2022 will be its last.

In other sports car news, Infiniti announced that the Q60 Coupe is not long for this world. 2022 will be the final model year for this car. That’s a shame, because it’s a beautiful vehicle. Infiniti says that the Q50 sedan will remain in production for 2023, but that the company will be focusing on building SUVs and electric vehicles moving forward. No surprise there – grab one while you can.

Here’s the New Lexus RX & Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid

Toyota and Lexus are going all-in on electrified and electric SUVs.

 

2023 Lexus RX

The Lexus RX will be all new for 2023, featuring new powertrain, evolutionary styling and more. Up front, you’ll see a new spin on Lexus’ “spindle grille” design, which to me, it looks a little strange… But Lexus has proven it’s not afraid of radical looks. In addition to this, there will be a couple plug-in hybrid RX models as well as other a new AWD system called “Direct4”. The 3.5L V6 is gone, now replaced by a 2.4L inline four-cylinder engine shared with the Lexus NX. The “RX-L” longer wheelbase model is also dropped, but Lexus IS reportedly coming out with a new large 3-row SUV called the “TX”. I don’t doubt the RX will remain a best seller.

In other news and recent reveals: The 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. While pricing is unknown, for reference the standard Corolla Cross starts at $22,445. The Corolla Cross Hybrid will achieve an average of 37 MPG (which is slightly worse than the RAV4 Hybrid) and will go on sale in the late summer/early fall timeframe of this year.

Coming In Hot – The 2023 Honda Civic Type R

A new generation of Type R is coming - Honda fans rejoice! And if you like red interiors,
you're going to be very happy.

Honda has dropped details on the 2023 Honda Civic Type R, which should delight performance enthusiasts everywhere. While details are sparce, let’s talk about some of what’s new.

We haven’t heard from Honda on what pricing or power figures will be for the new Type R, but we do know that the manual transmission and 2.0L turbo four-cylinder engine will carry over. I suspect that the engine will be more powerful, because otherwise what’s the point of releasing a new version, right? Overall, the design is less wild outside, but sportier inside, I think. On the interior, there are red seats AND red carpeting, which really reminds me of old Buicks, Cadillacs and Oldsmobiles from the 80s and early 90s for some reason… But it works here, because like I frequently mention – I’m a sucker for a red or brown interior anyways! Seats are heavily bolstered for track days and there’s a digital gauge cluster that I’m sure provides all necessary info for performance driving as well, such as boost.

Competition for the Civic Type R would include the Volkswagen Golf R, Hyundai Elantra N, and the soon-to-be-discontinued Hyundai Veloster N. Are you a Civic Type R fan? I’m interested in hearing more performance specs on this when they’re finally released.

Coming Soon - The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV SS

The 2024 Chevy Blazer EV will be built in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico alongside the gasoline powered Blazer.

Chevrolet has now officially unveiled the 2024 Blazer EV. It’ll ride on the Ultium platform and will have front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models. Based on first looks, I can see some design influence from GM’s other midsized Ultium EV offering, the Cadillac Lyriq – namely in the side profile. Ironically, the gas-powered crossover Blazer also now looks less appealing in my eyes after I’ve seen the Blazer EV. Though something tells me that this EV model will be just as controversial in nature as the gas model amongst diehard Chevy enthusiasts, since many will continue to say this isn’t a “real Blazer”. For many people, the word “Blazer” brings back memories of the of the K5 Blazer era - i.e., an SUV based on a body-on-frame architecture actually meant for off-roading, not a crossover. For me, I remember the S-10 Blazer of the 90s and Trailblazer of the 2000s.

History lessons aside, this new Blazer EV will offer up to 320 miles of range and an SS trim level with 557 HP. Speaking of trim levels, four will be offered: 1LT, 2LT, RS and SS. As mentioned, you can get the Blazer EV in several drive configurations – the 1LT, 2LT and RS come standard with FWD, but the RS can also be had with RWD. AWD is also offered on the 2LT and RS and depending on your choice of battery pack size, you’ll get 293 miles of estimated range out of the 2LT – the RS will be able to travel up to the aforementioned 320 miles of range depending on your configuration. GM hasn’t said what size the Blazer EV’s battery packs will be, but we know the Ultium battery packs are supplied by LG Chem. So, based on prior knowledge of GM's Ultium platform and specs, its reasonable to assume that the battery packs could be similar in size to the Lyriq. When plugged into a DC fast-charger, the Blazer can charge at up to 190 kW and gain 78 miles of range in 10 minutes.

First Day Out

Being the first electric Chevrolet to wear an SS badge, the Blazer SS can hit 60 MPH in under four seconds in Wide Open Watts mode (or “WOW” mode – just like GMC named the Hummer EV’s sporty drive mode “Watts To Freedom” or “WTF”). The Blazer EV SS will also have front Brembo brakes, but each trim level will get a unique front grille, with RS models adding a front light bar that does a “dance” whenever the car is unlocked and that doubles as a charging level indicator for when the vehicle is plugged in. Inside of the Blazer EV, there will be an 11-inch digital gauge cluster with a 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen with available factory navigation (as shown in pictures). Heated and cooled seats will be offered in upper trim levels, as well as red leather seats, which I’m ALWAYS personally a fan of. Other safety and tech features offered include automatic emergency braking, advanced parking assist, and GM’s Super Cruise highway driving system. The MyChevy app will also help you find charging station along your planned driving route, a useful touch. If that’s not cool enough for you, a Police Pursuit Vehicle Blazer EV will be released as well and will be fitted with the largest battery possible and available in RWD or dual-motor AWD.

Pricing for the Chevy Blazer EV will start at $44,995 for the 1LT trim. However, note that this trim will not arrive until Q1 2024 alongside the Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV). You can place your reservations now for a 2LT or RS Blazer EV, which are due to arrive on dealer lots next summer 2023. The 2LT starts at $47,595 and the RS at $51,995, while the Blazer EV SS will start at $65,995 and will be released in late 2023. Also note that GM is out of EV tax credits, so unless these are renewed by the current government we have in place, getting a $7,500 rebate for your Blazer EV is out of the question (as of the time of this writing). Competition for the Chevy Blazer EV includes the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Tesla Model Y and the Kia EV6.
